Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a young girl her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. While in New York, she volunteered in a bar as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. The city of Boston was where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
